CHARACTER:
Character Name: Kayla Emily Connors
Character Journal: seismic_shockwave
Physical Description: 5'2, brown hair, brown eyes. Rather petite. Has taken to wearing band T-shirts and jeans much of the time.
Age: 19
DOB: November 13th, 1992
PB: Ellen Page
Character Location/Home: She was born in Winnipeg, but will be resident in Westchester.
Alignment: Neutral Good. Or Hero, I guess.
Relatives: A bunch of religious bigots who have no role in events.
Abilities:Abilities: Kayla has the ability to transmit powerful force waves through her body and into the air or a specific target, where it explodes outwards with enormous concussive force. By stomping the ground, she can create a shockwave along the ground, which can knock people off their feet. By punching a wall, the resulting forcewave can shatter a huge part of it, rather than simply a part. Punching a human being using her forcewave powers causes whole-body concussive injury, rather than simply concentrated in a small area. Channeling forcewaves into the air around her creates an airburst that can knock people aside and to the ground, and can cause concussive injury at sufficiently close range. At maximum strength, these concussive waves are easily powerful enough to blast through ordinary brick or masonry walls and seriously compromise even reinforced concrete structures. Against a thick metal surface, however, they would be unlikely to have any serious impact. Using her powers against an ordinary brick/masonry wall about a foot thick would probably result in the pulverization of a 10x10 area of that wall.
Weaknesses and Flaws: Kayla tends to be a little brash and arrogant due to her invulnerability and is generally lacking somewhat in tact. As far as her powers is concerned, she sometimes has difficulty in “pulling her punches”.
Personality:
Kayla seems to be confidant, a little brash and very sure of herself. She is usually friendly to strangers and is very warm and personable with her friends, sometimes been almost excessively so. She also tends to be quite direct and honest, with a somewhat poor brain-to-mouth filter. Kayla tends to throw herself wholeheartedly into whatever she is doing. She works hard in school, plays hard on the weekends and, according to various roommates, even succeeds in sleeping hard.
Not stereotypically feminine, she has a tendency to prefer to hang out with boys and often ends up treated as ‘one of the boys’. Now that she is in college, however, she has been trying to temper her image a little bit. That being said, she still prefers watching hockey to shopping, heavy metal to easy listening and beer to mixed drinks. She has, however, stopped dressing like a lumberjack. She enjoys going out on the town and getting into misadventures with friends on occasion.
Though she will admit it to nearly no one, Kayla feels adrift without her family and feels very strongly that something is missing in her life. She has been curious in the past about different philosophies and religions, trying to find a purpose for her life. She has become very engaged in mutant issues, and slowly, she feels herself adopting more bitter and radical views than many of her old friends from the school. While physically, she is virtually fearless, she has much insecurity about her life in the wider sense.
Backstory: Kayla was born in Winnipeg, Canada to a solidly middle-class family, which happened to belong to a deeply conservative religious sect- a Millerite denomination, not unlike the Jehovah's Witnesses. Her mother was a school principal at the religious school and her father was a dentist. Most of her childhood was relatively ordinary, until she was about ten, when for no reason, her older cousin Michael turned green- he appeared to simply have the power to change his colour at will. She remembered how Michael had been 'disfellowshipped' immediately- that is, cast out of the family and never communicated with again.
A few years later, her own powers manifested in the middle of a fight with her parents. When she hit her hands against the table, the table more or less exploded- the victim of a force wave. The same force wave that destroyed the table also knocked her parents against the walls of the room. Her parents initially denied that it had been caused by their daughter, but rather by a freak accident. It was expected, of course, that no such incidents would happen in the future. Kayla, however, defied the order, curious about her strange new abilities.
One night, she was caught working on her abilities by a group of young men, who promptly tried to attack her. Trying to use her powers against them, she inflicted nearly-fatal injuries on two of the boys. The police, having known the girl for most of her life, were perhaps more sympathetic than would be expected. Her parents, however, were clearly and visibly disappointed that their daughter had the temerity to openly indulge her powers, and thus, endanger their social standing and their religious standing in the sect. Not long after that incident, Kayla was approached by a representative of the government. Her parents were somewhat relieved by the decision, as it ensured that she could be disfellowshipped with a lower chance of encountering legal trouble.
It was soon arranged that Kayla would be forwarded her college fund and an additional sum to be understood as her material share of the inheritance. It was made clear that there was to be no futher contact between her and the rest of the family. For the first year or two, life at the Institute was difficult for the shy girl who essentially believed that her soul was irrepairably wicked and would be annhiliated in the end-times. Over a few years, however, she began to emerge out of her shell and make new friends. She eventually abandoned any vestige of her previous beliefs and became a staunch and vocal atheist.
At the same time, it became manifestly obvious that she would not be able to really learn how to master her mutant abilities by herself and thus, through a quiet mutant “grapevine”, she managed to contact the Xavier Institute, signing up as a senior-year student.
Sample Post: Kayla looked up at the doors of the Xavier Institute for a moment before pressing the buzzer to go inside. She took a deep breath or two. It wasn’t like her to be so nervous about this, but she knew full well that this was a big step for her, leaving behind one life for good to embark on another. From now on she would identify herself as well as be identified as “mutant”. It was intimidating to say the least, but at the same time, it wasn’t like she could go back home. Her genes wouldn’t change. She took a deep breath and knocked on the door.
Here goes nothing, Kayla thought to herself. At least they won’t kick me out for something I was born with. The thought made her stomach twist. It was all she could do to bury it before it all came flooding back. Another deep breath and she’d composed herself, ready to face a brave new world.
Whelp, here I am. No going back now. She snapped back to attention as a voice answered her and she found herself telling them her name. The gates opened, and she stepped through.

In order to handle the transmission of energy through her body, Kayla has superhuman durability and superhuman strength sufficient to lift approximately 25 tons. She is largely invulnerable- small-arms fire would bounce off of her skin. In order to actually harm her, one would need to use a grenade launcher or similarly heavy armament and score a direct hit.
Weaknesses and Flaws: Kayla tends to be a little brash and arrogant due to her invulnerability and is generally lacking somewhat in tact. As far as her powers is concerned, she sometimes has difficulty in “pulling her punches”.
